About the role

Reports directly to the Vice-President, Personal Lines, Transformation \& Architecture.

Our Policy Administration System (PAS) is the transactional heart of Personal Lines at Intact. Every policy issued, changed, and renewed flows through it. At Intact, Canada’s largest provider of property and casualty insurance, that means millions of customers counting on it to be there in good and bad times.

Our PAS is built in-house - a substantial Java platform with an Angular front end, integrated with a broad landscape of insurance systems. We are modernizing this mission-critical platform, and we’re looking for a Principal to lead the technical strategy, architecture, and delivery of that transformation end to end. This is not a maintenance role. You will own the architecture, de-risk the migration off legacy, and shape how AI, data, and modern engineering practices come together in a system that thousands of colleagues and millions of customers depend on every day.

You will report directly to the Vice-President, Personal Lines, Transformation \& Architecture, and join an organization of roughly 370 people. You’ll have the mandate, visibility, and decision authority to match the accountability - and you’ll work shoulder-to-shoulder with our Personal Lines value streams, Intact Lab, and our Data \& AI teams.

Architecture, strategy \& delivery

  • Own the target architecture and the technical roadmap to get there — a scalable, resilient, high-performance PAS, and a credible, de-risked path off legacy.
  • Own the outcome end to end — you set the technical direction and you’re accountable for the delivery, with the authority and support to make the calls that get us there.
  • Integrate PAS with the enterprise through modern APIs and microservices, and establish the CI/CD, automated testing, and deployment that make rapid, high-quality releases the norm.

AI across the policy lifecycle

  • Embed AI where it changes the game for customers and underwriters — underwriting, pricing, and recommendations — using approved models, in partnership with Intact Lab and our Data \& AI teams.
  • Help define how AI is responsibly integrated into core systems: here, governance is an asset, not a brake — it’s how we earn customer trust.

AI in how we build

  • Drive the adoption of AI across the product lifecycle — not just in the coding, but in how the team designs, builds, tests, and ships. Help the engineering organization work faster and better with AI, and set the example others follow.
  • Partner with the broader Transformation agenda to bring AI-driven productivity into the PDLC end to end — removing bottlenecks, not just accelerating one step of it.

Trust, Data \& Security

  • Set a high bar for how we protect the data customers trust us with — data controls, secure-by-design engineering, and regulatory compliance built into the platform, not bolted on.
  • Partner with security and compliance to enforce policy, mitigate risk, and turn audits into a demonstration of how seriously we take that trust.

Leadership \& community

  • Grow an engineering community, not just a codebase - mentor developers, translate business goals into a clear technical roadmap, and bring the right people into the room to shape it.
  • Advise executives on platform strategy, and negotiate priorities, timelines, and deliverables with business partners — balancing a strong point of view with building genuine consensus.

Engineering excellence \& continuous improvement

  • Champion observability, scalability, security, and performance across the stack — robust monitoring and logging, performance tuning, load testing, and disciplined vulnerability management.
  • Challenge the status quo: run POCs, evaluate emerging technologies, and bring the ones that earn their place into the platform.
  • Define and track the metrics that matter — reliability, performance, user satisfaction, delivery flow — and use them to keep improving every day.

What you bring to the table

  • 15+ years in software engineering and enterprise architecture, including building or modernizing a PAS or comparable mission-critical system.
  • Deep expertise in system design, integration patterns, and data management and governance.
  • Deep proficiency in Java (e.g., Spring Boot) and modern web front ends (Angular an asset), with RESTful APIs and microservices — and the judgment to modernize a large in-house codebase without stalling delivery.
  • Hands-on experience driving AI into the development lifecycle — using AI to accelerate how teams design, build, and ship.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP) and cloud-native architectures.
  • Demonstrated AI integration in enterprise systems.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management — the ability to influence, negotiate, and build consensus across business and technology.
  • A bachelor’s in computer science / software engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • For candidates located in Quebec, bilingualism (French / English) is required – Need to interact on a regular basis with colleagues across the country.
  • No Canadian work experience required however must be eligible to work in Canada.

Why Intact

  • Real scope, real impact. Lead the modernization of a platform at the core of Canada’s largest P\&C insurer, with a direct line to the VP setting the transformation and architecture agenda.
  • AI as a strategic bet, not a bolt-on. Work alongside Intact Lab and our Data \& AI teams to build AI into the systems that run the business.
  • Autonomy by design. Our federated architecture pushes decisions close to the people doing the work — you’ll have room to lead.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits, and significant room to grow.

Are you a technical leader who wants to modernize a system millions of people rely on — with the mandate to do it right? We’d be thrilled to hear from you.
