We are looking for a Machine Shop Supervisor to lead a team of CNC programmers, CNC operators, and conventional machinists.

Under the supervision of the Production Manager, you will play a key role in the success of our machine shop by ensuring that teams have the resources, tools, and support needed to meet and exceed our production, quality, and health and safety goals.

More than a supervisory role, this position will allow you to directly contribute to the improvement of our manufacturing methods, the optimization of our machining capabilities, and the development of your team members. You will be a true reference point for shop operations, while collaborating closely with Planning, Engineering, and other teams in the organization.

Your Role

Leadership, Team Management, and Employee Development

  • Lead, motivate, and maintain a high level of engagement within the team.
  • Assign tasks to operators and machinists according to priorities and production schedules.
  • Coach, support, and guide team members to foster their development and success.
  • Train new employees and ensure continuous training for team members.
  • Identify training needs and create or update training instructions and procedures.
  • Participate in the interview and selection process for new machinists and production employees, when required.
  • Manage performance, labor relations, and disciplinary matters, in collaboration with management and in accordance with company policies.
  • Effectively communicate staff-related issues to the Production Manager.
  • Act as a resource person and provide technical and operational support to team members.

Production and Machine Shop Operations

  • Align fabrication programming and planning with machine capabilities.
  • Collaborate closely with the Planner to implement the daily production schedule.
  • Participate in weekly production meetings and track priorities.
  • Assign tasks to team members based on production needs and deadlines.
  • Supervise operational efficiency and ensure production standards are met.
  • Inspect work in progress on various machines in the shop.
  • Collaborate with programmers and machinists to develop effective machining programs.
  • Work closely with the Engineering department to resolve quality-related issues.
  • Complete required labor reports.
  • Prepare machining estimates and plan the tools needed to complete jobs.
  • Be able to set up and operate CNC routers, vertical milling machines, and/or lathes.
  • Diagnose technical issues and provide advice or support to machinists as needed.

Optimization and Continuous Improvement

  • Develop standardized tool lists for various products.
  • Implement modular fixturing systems to reduce setup times.
  • Establish digital manufacturing plans and pre-job preparation initiatives.
  • Develop and optimize tool and toolroom management strategies.
  • Use common tools to support inventory management strategies.
  • Establish and manage an effective material procurement system.
  • Develop and manage a material scrap and rework management program.
  • Develop Kanban, vendor distribution, and inventory management strategies.
  • Assess and plan equipment and production capacity needs.
  • Optimize equipment utilization and develop shop capabilities to improve efficiency.
  • Participate in Lean manufacturing initiatives and contribute to continuous process improvement.

Health and Safety

  • Ensure all activities are carried out in accordance with established health and safety procedures, protocols, and standards.
  • Reinforce health and safety best practices among team members.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment on the production floor.
  • Set an example and continuously promote a health and safety-focused culture.
  • Ensure shop operations comply with applicable health and safety requirements and regulations.

Tool, Material, and Resource Management

  • Manage the toolroom.
  • Check tool and supply stocks needed for operations and place orders when required.
  • Plan the tools needed to complete jobs.
  • Contribute to the optimization of material, inventory, and production supply management.

The Profile We Are Looking For

  • DEP in electromechanical or equivalent technical training.
  • Intermediate to advanced technical experience in mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic fields.
  • Experience in a machining and manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in team supervision or leadership, an asset.
  • Good knowledge of CNC machining and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to set up and operate CNC routers, vertical milling machines, and/or lathes.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in French and English, both spoken and written.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent ability to manage priorities in a dynamic production environment.
  • Analytical mindset and problem-solving approach.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality.
  • Ability to make decisions and quickly identify solutions to operational issues.
