The Senior Accountant or Senior Accountant Accounting prepares financial reports in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) in the United States as well as regulations in Canada and the United States. The person holding the position collaborates with internal stakeholders to ensure the quick and accurate preparation of financial information. This person has multiple interactions and contacts with senior management and the leadership team.
Main Responsibilities
Preparation of External Reports
- Prepare quarterly and annual reports required by the Canadian Securities Administrators and the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) of the United States for the consolidated operations of the Company.
- Compile and update end-of-month control lists and electronic reports, including the publication of financial statements for designated domains
- Assist other team members during the quarterly and annual closing procedure
- Lead internal control of the above-mentioned processes in accordance with the requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX)
- Work closely with auditors to provide information and clarifications during internal and external audits
- Prepare quarterly and annual reports in accordance with the requirements of the Surface Transportation Board (STB) for the consolidated rail companies of the Company in the United States and the Office of Transportation of Canada (OTC) for the consolidated rail companies of the Company in Canada.
- Prepare other regulatory reports required by government agencies such as surveys and reports from Statistics Canada and Transport Canada (TC), the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the regulatory filings of the States for all American legal entities.
- Update and manage administrative rules to compile the differences between the GAAP ledger in the United States and the STB and OTC ledgers.
Preparation of Internal Reports
- Prepare the company's ledger account reconciliations, taking into account the different legal entities of the Company, including bank accounts, long-term debt, environmental liabilities and various payable charges accounts
- Comply with the company's accounting methods and procedures for processing transactions in Systems, Applications and Procedures (SAP)
- Prepare and review financial reports and internal presentations in consultation with internal stakeholders such as Investor Relations, Taxation, Human Resources and Financial Planning
- Monitor the main internal controls of financial information and identify improvements to processes to achieve efficiency gains
Projects
- Implement process improvements, including taking advantage of technologies (such as TM1) to improve the process of closing consolidated and regulatory financial statements
Working Conditions
This position involves standard office working conditions and a normal work schedule from Monday to Friday, and is eligible for CN's flexible telework policy. Due to the nature of the position, the holder must be able to meet tight deadlines, tolerate pressure well and manage stress.
Experience
- Accounting
- At least 3 years of experience in an accounting firm or relevant experience in the field
Education, Certification and Designation
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a related discipline

Technical Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of GAAP accounting conventions in the United States and the rules and regulations of the Canadian and U.S. Securities Administrators
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint)
- Knowledge of Visio and Business Objects
- Excellent understanding of the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) framework and internal controls with regard to financial information
- Knowledge of SAP, Business Warehouse, Workiva and TM1 applications*
- Any knowledge in the above areas is an asset
