Senior Software Developer - (Online services - Hosting Platforms)
TechnologyDescription
Company Description
Ubisoft is a global leader in the video game industry, with teams around the world creating original and memorable experiences, from Assassin's Creed and Rainbow Six to Just Dance and more. We believe that the diversity of perspectives allows players and teams to thrive. If you are passionate about innovation and pushing the boundaries of entertainment, join us and contribute to creating the unknown!
As part of the Online services team at Ubisoft Montreal, you will join the team responsible for bridging to Ubisoft's online services for all studios and titles. Your work has a direct impact on the reliability, latency, and security of traffic destined for players, serving hundreds of millions of users.
You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of programmers, SREs, and game studios, where each person shares their knowledge and is encouraged to grow every day.
What You Will Do
As a Senior Software Developer - (Online services), you will design, develop, and operate distributed Gateway services with a focus on high availability, low latency, scalability, and security.
- Write production-quality, well-tested, and idiomatic code in Go and TypeScript/Node.js and Lua, with a measurable impact on latency, reliability, and security.
- Contribute to the technical design of new Gateway features and high-level architecture decisions.
- Lead the evolution towards a self-serve Gateway, allowing internal client teams (game teams, online services) to integrate their routes securely without manual intervention.
- Integrate security from the design of the Gateway: threat modeling, OWASP API Security Top 10 mitigations, WAF and edge protection policies, hardening of routing, authentication, and rate-limiting layers.
- Provision and operate the Gateway infrastructure as code (Terraform, AWS CDK or CloudFormation).
- Integrate observability into everything you deliver: metrics, structured logs, traces, SLO-based alerts.
- Be part of an agile team that collaborates on technical designs, new features, and continuous improvement of existing code.
- Mentor and support less experienced colleagues, participate in code reviews and architecture discussions.
- Debug, profile, and improve the existing codebase under production load.
Qualifications
You are looking for the opportunity to leverage your experience and passion with one of the world's largest gaming platforms. You are eager to modernize a critical piece of infrastructure that every online service at Ubisoft depends on.
You have excellent communication skills and enjoy sharing your knowledge by guiding less experienced colleagues. You believe in shared team responsibility and naturally collaborate with your peers to learn, share ideas, and solve complex problems.
You actively use AI-assisted development tools (Claude, GitHub Copilot, etc.) in your daily work and are eager to help the team level up with these tools: better code reviews, faster prototyping, smarter automation.
What You Bring
- 5 years or more of professional programming experience.
- Strong proficiency in Go and/or Node.js/TypeScript, with the ability to level up on Lua (OpenResty).
- Solid programming fundamentals: clean code, design patterns, idiomatic language usage (concurrency in Go, asynchronous patterns in Node.js).
- Rigorous testing practices: unit tests, integration tests, test pyramid. Comfortable refactoring legacy code with confidence.
- Practical experience in debugging and profiling production code (CPU, memory, latency) under load.
- Solid experience in designing, developing, and operating RESTful APIs and large-scale distributed backend services.
- Practical experience with AWS (deployment, networking, IAM, observability).
- Practical experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, AWS CDK or CloudFormation) to provision and operate AWS resources.
- Comfortable with CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI, GitHub Actions or equivalent) and modern DevOps practices.
- Good understanding of HTTP, TLS, networking, and API gateway concepts (rate limiting, authentication, routing, caching).
- Solid experience in API security: threat modeling, OWASP API Security Top 10, secure-by-default design (authentication, authorization, abuse protection).
- Experience with WAF and edge protection technologies (AWS WAF or equivalent): rule writing, bot mitigation, DDoS protection, rate-limiting policies.
Assets
- Experience with nginx/OpenResty and Lua scripting.
- Experience building or operating an API Gateway or service mesh (Kong, Envoy, AWS API Gateway, etc.).
- Knowledge of authentication and authorization protocols (OAuth2, OIDC, JWT, mTLS).
- Experience with self-serve / internal developer platforms.
- Experience with clouds other than AWS (Tencent Cloud, GCP, Azure).
- Practical experience integrating AI-assisted development tools (Claude, GitHub Copilot) into team workflows.
- Experience with SRE practices: SLOs, error budgets, incident management.
- Experience supporting live AAA games or large-scale online platforms.
