Description

Director or Director of Mining Projects

No promise is more important than that of taking care of our environment, and we want to help you keep this promise.

Join our global network of engineers, scientists, verifiers, planners, and environmental specialists working together to create a better world. Committed to sustainable development, GHD improves the physical, natural, and social environment of the communities in which we operate.

GHD is looking for an experienced individual to fill the position of Senior Director of Mining Projects to provide leadership in the delivery, governance, and assurance of complex environmental programs supporting the mining sector. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional who excels in regulated environments and has a strong track record of delivering compliant, defensible, and reproducible projects for owners.

As the Senior Director of Projects, you act as a trusted advisor to clients and are comfortable navigating the intersection of technical delivery, regulatory compliance, and program governance. You have a deep understanding of U.S. and Canadian mining laws, consent orders, and rehabilitation criteria, and you know how to integrate assurance and quality control, verification, and documentation into daily activities, ensuring compliance is built in from the outset rather than caught at inspection.

Success in this role requires cross-functional thinking, sound judgment, and the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in ambiguous contexts while maintaining schedules, quality, and regulatory certainty.

Hybrid Work Model:

Our workplace is based on a hybrid model that combines office collaboration and flexibility. Join us in the office three days a week to contribute, build connections, and thrive in our dynamic environment. This position can be based in one of our offices in the Montreal (Downtown, Saint-Laurent), Laval, Brossard, or Quebec area.

You will be working with a dynamic and high-performing team, and this role offers a variety of tasks. You will be called upon to:

  • Approve project planning and ensure execution plans are tailored to the goals, particularly in terms of scope, schedule, resources, risks, and stakeholder communication.
  • Lead monthly project progress reviews to confirm regulatory status, schedule adherence, technical progress, risks, and contractor performance; assign corrective actions and document their closure.
  • Maintain documentation and traceability: ensure deliverables are tracked, transmission logs are recorded, and a revision history is maintained for key deliverables, including plans, analytical datasets, reports, submissions, meeting minutes, and corrective actions.
  • Ensure that communications, reporting production plans, and deadline controls are defined at the outset and planning, and are actively followed to meet reporting obligations on time.
  • Oversee supplier and contractor governance, including the use of pre-qualified suppliers, review of work plans and procedures, and verification mechanisms in line with deliverable requirements.
  • Ensure deliverable verification and quality requirements are met before external use; ensure that verification and review by competent persons, as well as director approval, are performed and documented in the project workspace.
  • Collaborate with the program manager for escalations, limits of authority, and alignment with program governance and performance indicators.
  • Promote a culture focused on health and safety, compliance, and continuous improvement, where controls are integrated into ways of working rather than added after the fact.

What you will bring to the team

  • Demonstrated leadership in the delivery of complex or high-risk projects within regulated environments.
  • Excellent understanding of project governance, assurance, and verification processes, as well as documentation controls.
  • Experience in managing multidisciplinary teams, suppliers, and contractors.
  • Strong planning, reporting, and stakeholder communication skills.
  • Experience with PMBOK-aligned tools, such as communication and reporting production plan templates, work breakdown structure-based planning, and structured project status reports.
  • Experience with integrated data pipelines and dashboards that support compliance and performance visibility.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, geology, environmental sciences, or a related field.
  • Holding (or in the process of obtaining) an engineer's license from the Order of Engineers of Quebec (OIQ) or a geologist's license from the Order of Geologists of Quebec (OGQ) will be considered an asset.
  • More than 10 years of progressive experience in environmental or mining project delivery, including the direction of complex, high-risk, or regulation-bound programs, such as environmental rehabilitation and site assessment, report writing, data management and interpretation, project coordination, and client relationship management.
  • Holding the ASP Construction certification.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to meet clients, if necessary.
  • Experience with high-volume recurring programs where standardization and automation are used to improve efficiency.
  • Good knowledge of analytical dashboards and data management practices that support compliance tracking and decision-making.
