About the Position

The Canadian Museum of Nature (CMN) is seeking an innovative botanist (vascular plants) to design, conduct, and lead an independent and collaborative research program focused on collections, in the fields of systematics and taxonomy or closely related disciplines, with a particular emphasis on Canada. The incumbent will publish scientific research; contribute to the development, use, and scientific valorization of the CMN's botanical collections, housed at the National Herbarium of Canada; and collaborate with museum staff, including teams responsible for public programs and exhibit design. The incumbent will also undertake significant outreach efforts and use various communication means to promote botanical research conducted at the CMN to the public in the National Capital Region, across Canada, and internationally.

Education

Hold a doctorate from an accredited post-secondary institution specializing in the study of vascular plants.

Applications from individuals enrolled in a doctoral program but who have not yet obtained their degree will be considered. However, the thesis must have been defended and the doctorate obtained before the start of the position.

Language Requirements

• English and French are essential
• Bilingualism is not mandatory: CBC (definition)

Experience

• Experience in designing, managing, and conducting research based on vascular plant collections in the fields of systematics, taxonomy, or closely related disciplines.
• Experience in identifying, documenting, and interpreting vascular plant diversity using morphological, molecular, and/or other scientific approaches.
• Experience in using herbarium collections and specimens to support scientific research, biodiversity studies, taxonomy, collection development, and knowledge generation.
• Experience in publishing peer-reviewed scientific research.
• Experience in presenting research findings to scientific audiences.
• Experience in communicating science to the public through exhibits, public programs, digital media, or other public engagement means.
• Experience in effective collaboration to achieve goals, both within and outside one's research domain.
• Experience with using computers in a scientific environment, including the use of common office software (e.g., Microsoft 365 suite).
• The following experience will be considered an asset:
• Experience working with natural history collections in a museum setting.
• Experience in planning and conducting fieldwork.
• Experience in obtaining grants, external funding, or other support for research projects.
• Experience working with Indigenous communities.
• Experience in supervising, mentoring, or supporting students, staff, volunteers, or research assistants.
• Note on Fieldwork:

For candidates who wish to conduct fieldwork at the Canadian Museum of Nature, the following experience must be described in their application and will be taken into account:

• Experience conducting field expeditions, especially in Canada, including managing or conducting fieldwork logistics (obtaining permits, organizing travel and accommodations, transporting equipment and supplies, etc.).
• Experience conducting and supervising a fieldwork team (staff, students, and colleagues), including demonstrating leadership to create a safe and inclusive work environment.
• Experience in researching and obtaining partnerships and funding for fieldwork.
