About the Position

The Assistant Curator of the Collections is responsible for the effective management of five national sub-collections dedicated to Earth sciences: minerals, gemstones, mineral deposits and occurrences, rocks, and meteorites. Under the supervision of the Curator, the successful candidate will play a key role in the long-term preservation, organization, and promotion of a diverse collection.

This position involves overseeing the conservation and storage of the collection, managing and improving specimen data, and supporting digitization initiatives. The candidate will contribute to enhancing and increasing the scientific value of the collection by identifying gaps, recommending acquisitions, and staying informed about the specimen market and best practices in collection management.

The position also requires providing expertise and advice to internal and external clients, supporting research, and responding to public inquiries, as well as participating in specimen loans and outreach activities. The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues, train and mentor students or volunteers, and contribute to institutional projects and priorities.

The candidate must demonstrate a keen analytical mind, sound judgment, and a high degree of autonomy, as well as the ability to assess the strengths of an existing collection and identify opportunities for its development. A solid understanding of mineralogy, museum practices, and health and safety protocols is essential, as is a commitment to maintaining professional networks and staying informed about the latest developments in the field.

Education

A recognized bachelor's degree in science with a demonstrated concentration in mineralogy or an equivalent combination of relevant studies and experience is required.

Language Requirements: English is essential. Bilingualism is an asset.

Experience

• 3 years of experience in the field of mineralogical collections and diverse geological materials
• Experience in handling specimens in a museum or scientific setting
• Experience in using collection management and data systems, as well as leveraging various information sources (field notes, publications, archival documents) to enrich specimen records
• Experience in networking with the broader mineralogical community (collectors, dealers, clubs, shows, etc.)
• Experience in cleaning, restoring, and preparing mineral specimens (an asset)
• Experience in communicating with the public through guided tours, presentations, or outreach activities (an asset)
• Experience in supervising, training, or coordinating the work of technical staff, students, interns, or volunteers (an asset)
