Course: General Geology - EPSC 221 - Fall 2026 (3 Credits)

Course Description:

An introductory course in physical geology for civil and mining engineering students. The focus is on the properties of rocks and minerals, major geological processes, natural hazards, and their effects on engineering structures. The laboratory is an integral part of the course, which includes rock and mineral identification, basic aerial photo and geological map interpretation techniques, and structural geology.

This course includes two one-hour lectures and a three-hour laboratory per week for 13 weeks per term (from August 31, 2026, to December 4, 2026). The final exam must be proctored by the instructor and can be scheduled at any time (i.e., daytime or evening) during the period from December 7 to December 22.

You will be responsible for teaching, course management, creating exam and laboratory materials, part of the grading, and managing teaching assistants (TAs), who will assist you with laboratories and grading. The number of teaching assistants is linked to the number of enrollments, which should be 144 students.

Qualifications for Teaching

PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences or equivalent training.

Expertise in course content, previous teaching experience in courses with a large number of students preferred.
