Mandate

Medical technologist or medical technician with a degree in medical laboratory technology who, while performing technical analyses or tasks within a clinical laboratory or medical biology, regularly oversees, trains, and coordinates the activities of others.

  • Administers immunizing products according to established directives and protocols, respecting asepsis rules and appropriate injection techniques;
  • Observes the user after the administration of a vaccine and reports any signs of reaction or undesirable effect to the responsible nurse;
  • Contributes to the maintenance of the cold chain and proper storage of immunizing products;

Education and user support

  • Participates in teaching users and their caregivers regarding:
  • Self-sampling: procedures, precautions, conservation;
  • Self-administration of a prescribed product, including pre-analytical modalities;
  • Side effects and undesirable effects of products, to ensure informed and free consent;
  • Recommendations following a blood sampling.
  • Reassures the user, answers their questions, and refers to the nurse complex needs or specific inquiries.
  • Participates in peer orientation and supervision of interns.
  • Health prevention and promotion
  • Contributes to the sensitization of the population on the importance of vaccination and prevention measures, supporting information campaigns and sharing key messages with the clientele.

Requirements

  • Must hold a college diploma (DEC) in biomedical analysis technology from a recognized school by the competent ministry.
  • Must be a member of the Professional Order of Medical Technologists of Quebec (OPTMQ).
