Heavy Equipment Operator

The Heavy Equipment Operator in Civil Engineering is responsible for the safe operation and maneuvering of heavy equipment, primarily the hydraulic excavator, to perform earthwork, excavation, leveling, trenching, and other operations necessary for the construction of infrastructure (roads, bridges, underground pipelines, buildings, etc.).

Main Tasks

• Jobsite Preparation
• Read and interpret plans, estimates, and work instructions.
• Perform a pre-operational inspection of the hydraulic excavator (oil levels, fuel, condition of components).
• Excavation Operations
• Dig trenches for the installation of pipelines (water supply, sewer, drainage).
• Clear and level land according to specifications.
• Load trucks with materials (soil, gravel, rocks, etc.).
• Perform open-cut or deep excavations near existing structures.
• Handle different types of buckets or attachments (hydraulic hammer, grab, vibratory plate, etc.).
• Control and Precision
• Follow the instructions of the foreman or signaler for precise positioning.
• Work near underground utility lines (gas, electricity, telecommunications) with caution.
• Adjust slopes and levels according to construction standards.
• Equipment Maintenance
• Clean the hydraulic excavator at the end of the day.
• Perform minor maintenance tasks (greasing, filter replacement, etc.).
• Report any mechanical anomalies to the maintenance supervisor.
• Safety Compliance
• Strictly follow safety guidelines (PPE, hazardous areas).
• Maintain constant vigilance during maneuvers near workers or traffic.
• Respect load and tilt limits.

• Compensation: $40.83 to $48.03 per hour
