Process Safety Engineer / Refrigeration Engineer

Quebec, QC LAPORTE is looking for a Process Safety Engineer / Refrigeration Engineer with at least 2 years of experience in process safety and industrial refrigeration.

This position is offered across Canada, in a hybrid mode from one of our Canadian offices.

Reporting to the Principal Refrigeration Engineer, our Process Safety Engineer will contribute to process risk analyses, process safety management programs, and the secure design of ammonia and CO2 refrigeration systems for our clients in the food processing, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology sectors.

Responsibilities

• Plan and lead process refrigeration risk analyses (PHA): HAZOP, "What-If", checklists, node analysis, LOPA studies, and other risk identification methodologies. This includes:

+ Reviewing process safety information: process flow diagrams (PFD), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), equipment data sheets, control and protection systems, to interpret the design and define nodes to analyze; + Preparing and scheduling PHA tools (PHA-Pro or equivalent) before sessions, and accurately documenting technical discussions and design during studies; + Writing clear technical reports on PHAs, structuring risk analysis data, and adhering to risk classification philosophy;

• Support the development, revision, and audit of clients' process safety management (PSM) programs, including CSA Z767, provincial boiler and pressure vessel safety authority regulations, and provincial occupational health and safety requirements;
• Learn methodologies and tools for indoor and outdoor dispersion analyses, as well as general hazard and risk assessments;
• Contribute to all ammonia safety deliverables: discharge system design, machine room ventilation calculations, system inventory tank sizing calculations;
• Conduct on-site inspections of refrigeration systems, field verification of P&ID diagrams, and safety and compliance audits to standards.
• Write, format, and review project specifications, proposals, reports, templates, and other documents necessary to achieve project objectives and requirements;
• Perform mass and energy balance calculations and associated technical analyses for refrigeration systems and related process systems;
• Participate in the development of standard operating procedures (SOP) and operator training materials;
• Organize and maintain project files;
• Provide technical support and build relationships with new and existing clients;
• Collaborate with internal and external team members to ensure project success.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in chemical or mechanical engineering, or relevant qualifications in a related field;
• Membership in a Canadian provincial engineering order as a registered engineer (Eng. or P.Eng.) or Candidate for Professional Practice (CPI or EIT) (OIQ, PEO, APEGA, EGBC, etc.);
• At least 2 years of experience in process safety, chemical process industry, or industrial refrigeration;
• Participation in risk analysis sessions (HAZOP, LOPA, What-If) as a secretary, participant, or facilitator;
• Knowledge of ammonia and CO2 refrigeration systems;
• Knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including CSA B52, IIAR, ASHRAE 15, ASME B31.5/B31.3, and CSA Z767;
• Ability to read and interpret process flow diagrams (PFD) and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID);
• Strong technical writing and attention to detail;
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work autonomously and collaboratively;
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel;
• Ability to travel to clients' sites in Canada, the United States, and internationally;
• Reliable transportation and valid driver's license;
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, with advanced Excel skills and knowledge of various AI tools such as Claude Code and Copilot.
• Knowledge of PHA software (PHA-Pro, PHAWorks), process simulation tools, and AutoCAD, Revit, or Plant 3D (an asset).
