Main Responsibilities

The mechanical engineer is responsible for the development of the mechanical components of the company's manufactured products and for meeting established schedules and budgets. The candidate is also responsible for producing the documentation related to each project, including product data sheets. He/she acts as a resource person in mechanical engineering within the company and is responsible for achieving the objectives set in his/her part of the project, while respecting the company's criteria: safety - reliability - robustness - quality - profitability. Finally, he/she ensures a watch on market trends and customer needs and identifies innovative products to develop.

  • Performs mechanical engineering and design of products created by the research and development department.
  • Determines the mechanical requirements of new products.
  • Creates, draws, and/or recommends the mechanical components of new products.
  • Produces manufacturing, assembly, installation, presentation, certification drawings, etc.
  • Writes and maintains the necessary documents for certification and compliance, assembly manuals, user manuals, technical specification documents, etc.
  • Conducts mechanical tests on test products and new products.
  • Ensures the acquisition of necessary documents at the beginning of the project.
  • Applies the Stage Gate process in the realization of his/her R&D projects.
  • Participates in identifying new products to develop and/or means to optimize the performance of existing ones and formulates his/her recommendations to his/her supervisor.
  • Maintains paper and electronic files related to each of his/her R&D projects, including product data sheets of developed and/or improved products accompanied by the list of components, manufacturing processes, gets them approved by his/her supervisor, and ensures their transmission to the concerned persons.
  • Conducts supplier and price research for specific inputs.
  • Maintains professional relationships with external partners and suppliers in the processing of his/her files and, if necessary, visits them.
  • Obtains quotations from suppliers or subcontractors.
  • Selects components and ensures their standardization in the products.
  • Collaborates with the procurement team for the ordering of materials and/or equipment for each of the new projects.
  • Creates, manages, and maintains the bill of materials (BOM) of new products.
  • Reviews the plans of new products and ensures their compliance with design and engineering requirements and specifications before production.
  • Assembles prototypes of new products and performs feasibility and quality tests of prototypes in the factory.
  • Manages changes and extras to certain projects, if necessary.
  • Participates in department meetings and collaborates on good teamwork.
  • Collaborates with other members of the R&D team to integrate mechanical components into the department's projects.
  • Informs himself/herself of market trends, customer needs, and competitors' offerings in order to anticipate customers' product demands and keep the company at the forefront of the markets with its products.
  • Acts as a technological reference within the company for mechanical engineering questions.
  • Provides technical support to production teams during the introduction of new products and, if necessary, technical assistance to the sales department.
  • Conducts R&D projects, ensures adequate documentation of these, their compliance with safety - reliability - robustness - quality - feasibility and profitability.
  • Ensures the realization of the projects entrusted to him/her while respecting the established schedule and budget.
  • Notes the hours worked on each of the projects in a logbook.
  • Collaborates in the preparation of R&D credit application files.
  • Participates in the documentation required for patenting of company products, if necessary.
  • Collaborates in maintaining the company's innovation criteria.
  • Collaborates in maintaining a harmonious work environment within his/her department as well as with the personnel of other departments.
  • Applies the human resources management policies found in the company's Employee Handbook.
  • Performs all other related tasks.

Qualifications Required

  • Computer skills: SolidWork PDM, MS Office, ERP (asset)
  • Availability for occasional trips to subcontractors and suppliers
