Veterinary Clinician

Description of the Position

In collaboration with the Animal Care Committees and the veterinarian responsible for the Veterinary Services Department, the veterinary clinician will exercise rigorous monitoring of animal health issues, advise and support researchers in the development of their animal use protocols for teaching or research, and ensure compliance with the guiding principles, standards, laws, ethical rules, and best practices governing the use of animals.

More specifically, the person will be responsible for

• Monitoring, diagnosing, and treating animal health issues.
• Advising researchers at the University and its affiliated centers on the development of their protocols and the use of animals for teaching and research.
• Analyzing research protocols submitted to the Animal Care Committees and ensuring compliance with the guiding principles of the Canadian Council on Animal Care. Collaborating to develop specific recommendations and ensuring their implementation.
• Developing and revising standardized operating procedures and policies. Monitoring the use and care of animals, identifying or developing techniques and procedures to promote the maintenance and improvement of animal health.
• Recommending the cancellation of animal use authorizations in cases of non-compliance with previously approved standards and procedures. Prescribing necessary changes.
• Developing and implementing animal health preventive standards and programs. Supervising the implementation of the sentinel program for the University's and its affiliated centers' animal facilities.
• Supervising the import and export of animals from the University and its affiliated centers.
• Supervising the animal enrichment program.
• Controlling the purchase and use of medications.
• Collaborating in the continuous training of staff in their sector.
• Supervising and collaborating on visibility or knowledge transfer activities for staff and clients in their sector.
• Temporarily performing tasks from a related or lower position when required.

Clinical Aspect

• Conducting visits to the University of Laval's and its affiliated research centers' animal facilities.
• Developing preventive medicine programs.
• Diagnosing health issues and treating animals used in teaching and research.
• Interpreting various diagnostic results: serology, bacteriology, parasitology, hematology, and biochemistry.
• Providing on-call veterinary services on evenings and weekends, shared with other veterinarians.
• Supervising the implementation of programs by animal health technicians.
• Performing physical examinations of animals upon arrival, examinations of animals under treatment, re-evaluations, and examinations according to determined frequencies.
• Performing routine surgeries as needed.
• Determining actions to be taken when an animal is in distress.
• Controlling the purchase and use of medications.
• Supervising the animal enrichment program.
• Supervising the import and export of animals.

Animal Care Committee and Researcher Support Aspect

• Analyzing research protocols submitted to the CPA.
• Fulfilling various specific mandates requested by the committees.
• Assisting researchers in responding to various questions raised by the CPA.
• Advising researchers and professors on issues with experimental or teaching protocols, analyzing the situation, and proposing solutions.
• Advising researchers and professors on refining techniques and procedures performed on animals and on the development of new protocols.
• Recommending the cancellation of animal use authorizations in cases of non-compliance with previously approved standards and procedures, prescribing necessary changes.

Other

• Participating in the development of the animal user training program.
• Participating in the revision of standardized operating procedures.
• Participating in the preparation for the CCPA visit.

Will be considered an asset

• Experience with non-human primates and other animal species found in research animal facilities.

In the course of their duties, the person will have to travel daily to one of the animal facilities located on campus or in one or more of the following affiliated research centers

• Research Center of the CHU de Québec – Université Laval site Enfant-Jésus and CHUL.
• CERVO Research Center.
• IUCPQ Research Center – Université Laval.

Subject to the appreciation of skills, any combination of education and experience deemed equivalent and relevant may be considered.

Education and Experience

Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and two (2) years of relevant experience.

Other

Member of the Order of Veterinarians of Quebec (OMVQ).
