As Senior Director, Product Design for Bentley Open Applications, you will define the vision, strategy, and standard of excellence for design across one of Bentley's most critical product portfolios. You will lead a talented team of designers and researchers, shaping how infrastructure professionals around the world use our software, and how AI, data, and intelligent workflows transform their craft.
Reporting to the Chief Design Officer, with a functional reporting line to the Senior Vice President, Open Applications, you will collaborate closely with the Design, Product Management, Engineering, and Research teams to guide portfolio-wide decisions, advocate for user needs, and ensure that design plays a central role in the future evolution of Bentley Open Applications.
Responsibilities
- Define the long-term vision and strategy for product design for Bentley Open Applications, ensuring that design is a driver of business results, product differentiation, and user value.
- Lead and grow a complex organization composed of UX designers and researchers, including managers and experienced individual contributors, in a globally distributed environment.
- Serve as a partner to product management and engineering leaders, representing design at executive forums and contributing to roadmap, investment, and portfolio priority decisions.
- Advocate for the integration of AI into BOA products by identifying opportunities to add AI capabilities that enhance user productivity and generate actionable insights for infrastructure professionals.
- Foster the adoption of AI-assisted design and research processes to accelerate delivery while maintaining a high level of quality.
- Establish design principles and patterns for AI-powered experiences, ensuring trust, transparency, and explainability of solutions across the portfolio.
- Define and evolve the operational design model, including design systems, research practices, user experience strategies, and quality standards.
- Advocate for responsible and ethical use of AI by integrating considerations of bias, user autonomy, and privacy protection into design decisions.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with executive leadership and cross-functional partners to align user-centered priorities across product, engineering, marketing, and data teams.
- Manage departmental budgeting, workforce planning, and organizational structure, making strategic investment decisions that balance growth, capability, and efficiency.
- Foster a culture of AI mastery, experimentation, and continuous learning within the Design organization.
- Develop the next generation of design leaders by mentoring senior managers and individual contributors and supporting a strong practice community.
Qualifications
- Over 12 years of experience in product design and user research, including at least 7 years of leadership experience, including managing managers and developing organizations through growth and transformation.
- Demonstrated experience influencing executive leadership and senior management, as well as developing product strategies in partnership with Product and Engineering leaders.
- Strategic vision and systems thinking to define a long-term direction and translate it into measurable results for the business and users.
- Experience in AI-driven or data-centric product design, with a clear perspective on the impact of AI on user experience and design practices.
- Strong business acumen, including budget management, workforce planning, and prioritization in a context of competing demands.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and storytelling skills, with the ability to inspire teams and influence leadership.
- Experience in complex enterprise software (B2B) or technical software environments; experience in infrastructure, engineering, or industrial software is a plus.
