Rock Mechanics Geologist
The rock mechanics team at GHD is among the most active in the industry. It distinguishes itself through innovations in the field (digital mapping, use of 3D geological models to predict real-time conditions, etc.) as well as in engineering (finite element modeling, both in 2D and 3D and integrating rock-structure interaction). Our public clients (mainly transportation companies and government agencies) and our private clients (mainly large regional contractors but also Canadian and international) trust our professionals to develop innovative and optimal solutions, while ensuring the safety of their workers.
Grouping about fifteen professionals in Quebec, our specialists are the reference worldwide at GHD in underground excavation in rock, having the opportunity to collaborate internationally on major projects spread across North America, South America, Australia, and elsewhere.
Currently participating in an increasing number of large and/or complex projects, especially in the Montreal area, we aim to become a leader in the Canadian industry and have a significant impact on the transformation of our communities, both through our participation in major public transportation projects and through the rehabilitation and construction of new hydroelectric facilities.
We are currently looking for a Rock Mechanics Geologist to join our Montreal office team to contribute to the execution of numerous open-pit and underground excavation projects.
Main Responsibilities
- Mapping and evaluation of rock mass classification for foundations in rock, open-pit rock faces, or underground excavations (tunnels) according to GSI, Q, and RMR ratings;
- Technical follow-up to ensure the quality of executed work (excavation, drilling, rock face stabilization, installation of rock bolts and/or anchors, injections, placement of shotcrete, in-situ tests, etc.), coordination of site follow-up work (geotechnical instrumentation and others), and good communication with the client;
- Compilation of technical data related to the characterization of rock masses;
- On-site verification and testing (excavation bottom verification in rock, anchor pull-out tests);
- Supervision of various excavation works, including the installation of temporary or permanent support systems;
- Structural description of rock cores in the laboratory;
- Identification in the laboratory of minerals related to the quality of construction materials (alkali-aggregate reactions, pyrite, pyrrhotite, etc.);
- Preparation of various technical reports on-site, in the office, and in the laboratory, as appropriate;
- Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
Education and Competencies
- Bachelor's degree in geology or equivalent;
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in the construction follow-up of open-pit and underground rock excavations (tunnels and caverns);
- Good spoken and written French;
- Membership in the Order of Geologists of Quebec (OGQ);
- Possession of a valid ASP Construction card;
- Valid driver's license and vehicle.
