Position Summary

• The Sample Prep Shift Supervisor is responsible for leading the sample preparation team during an assigned shift. The role ensures samples are received, dried, crushed, split, pulverized, screened, packaged, and transferred according to company procedures, client requirements, safety standards, and production priorities.
• This is a practical leadership role. The team lead must be present on the floor, support employees, monitor work progress, address daily issues, and ensure accurate communication between shifts and departments.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise and coordinate sample preparation employees during an assigned shift.
• Assign tasks, track work progress, and adjust priorities or staffing as needed to meet processing deadlines and production goals.
• Ensure all sample preparation work complies with approved procedures, quality requirements, and client instructions.
• Verify sample identification, chain of custody, work orders, batches, labels, and sample movements between process steps.
• Monitor crushing, splitting, pulverizing, screening, cleaning, drying, waste management, and packaging activities.
• Ensure equipment is used safely and appropriately, including crushers, pulverizers, splitters, drying ovens, dust collectors, robotic equipment, and related tools.
• Complete required shift reports, production logs, downtime notes, maintenance requests, and quality or safety files.
• Identify bottlenecks, delays, reworks, sample mix-ups, and equipment issues, and quickly communicate concerns to the manager.
• Coach, train, and support employees on safe work practices, production standards, facility maintenance, and quality expectations.
• Promote a clean, organized, and safe work environment, including proper PPE use, dust control, lockout/tagout awareness, and hazard reporting.
• Communicate clearly with the Sample Prep Manager, Lab Manager, other departments, and the next shift.

Quality and Safety Expectations

• Adhere to all company health and safety policies, site rules, and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Ensure employees use required PPE and follow safe work procedures.
• Maintain sample integrity and prevent contamination, sample loss, and identification errors.
• Support audits, corrective actions, investigations, and continuous improvement activities.
• Report injuries, near-misses, equipment defects, hazardous conditions, and quality concerns immediately.

Qualifications and Experience

• Previous experience in sample preparation, mining, mineral processing, laboratory operations, production, or similar industrial environment is preferred.
• Previous experience as a supervisor, team lead, or team leader is an asset.
• Ability to read and follow work orders, procedures, schedules, and basic production reports.
• Strong communication, organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
• Comfortable working in a physically demanding, dusty, noisy, and fast-paced environment.
• Basic computer skills for production entry, emails, reports, and equipment or LIMS systems are an asset.
• Ability to work shifts, overtime, weekends, or adjusted schedules as required.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, carry, push, and pull during the work shift.
• Ability to wear required PPE, including safety glasses, steel-toe boots, hearing protection, gloves, respiratory protection, or other site-specific equipment.
• Ability to work near moving equipment, dust, noise, heat, and production deadlines.
