Heavy Equipment Operator - Hot Shot

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of large mobile equipment used to support steel mill operations. This role is essential for material movement, production support, and site safety. Operators work in a demanding industrial environment where strict adherence to safety guidelines and operational precision are essential.

Main Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment such as wheel loaders, bulldozers, excavators, cranes, locomotives, material handlers, transport trucks, and other support equipment safely and efficiently
• Support steel mill operations through material handling activities, including slag, scrap, raw materials, and finished by-products
• Conduct pre- and post-shift equipment inspections and report any mechanical or safety issues
• Use equipment in compliance with company policies, site procedures, and applicable safety regulations
• Stay alert in your surroundings when working in active areas of the plant with moving equipment, railroad traffic, and high-temperature processes
• Communicate effectively with dispatch, supervisors, and maintenance personnel
• Maintain clean and organized work areas and equipment cabs
• Complete required documentation for production, inspection, and equipment use
• Participate in safety meetings, work safety analyses (WSA), and ongoing training programs

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred
• Minimum of 1 to 3 years of experience operating heavy machinery in an industrial, steel mill, mining, construction, or similar environment
• Demonstrated ability to safely and efficiently operate various types of heavy machinery
• Strong commitment to safety and adherence to workplace policies
• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions
• Availability to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed
• Valid driver's license; additional equipment certifications are an asset

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Ability to climb in and out of equipment, work at heights, and remain seated for long periods
• Tolerance to heat, noise, dust, vibrations, and industrial conditions
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with or without assistance

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in active steel mills or industrial processing environments
• Knowledge of slag management, material logistics, or railroad operations
• Equipment certifications or documented training
• Basic mechanical knowledge to identify operational issues
