Fasken’s firmwide Business Development team has an immediate opening for a highly motivated, business-minded professional to support key practice groups, with an initial focus on Intellectual Property and Real Estate.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Business Development, the Business Development Specialist will work closely with lawyers, practice group leaders, and colleagues across Canada and internationally to develop and execute strategic business development initiatives that enhance market positioning, strengthen client relationships, and support new business opportunities. This highly visible, partner-facing role requires strong commercial awareness, sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to provide strategic advice, manage complex projects, and deliver high-quality execution in a fast-paced professional services environment, with responsibilities expected to evolve in response to the firm’s strategic priorities and business needs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Partner with Practice and Industry Group leadership to develop annual business plans and drive the execution of strategic priorities throughout the year.
  • Identify, evaluate, and pursue business development opportunities that strengthen market position, deepen client relationships, and support revenue growth.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance the profile, visibility, and market presence of the Intellectual Property and Real Estate Groups.
  • Support and participate in strategic client account and client development initiatives, including client targeting, relationship mapping, and opportunity identification.
  • Coordinate and support the development of pitches, RFPs, RFIs, client presentations, and other business development materials, collaborating with lawyers and internal stakeholders to deliver compelling client-focused submissions.
  • Prepare lawyers for client meetings, conferences, and business development trips by providing market intelligence, competitive insights, client research, briefing materials, and related support.
  • Facilitate cross-selling and cross-practice collaboration initiatives across the firm.
  • Participate in client-specific target teams and other firmwide growth initiatives.
  • Leverage the firm's CRM platform to track opportunities, maintain relationship intelligence, and support business development planning and reporting.
  • Conduct and analyze market, client, industry, and competitor research to identify trends, opportunities, and strategic insights that support practice and client development objectives.
  • Lead the strategy, development, and submission process for legal directory rankings, awards, surveys, and recognition programs, including Chambers, Legal 500, and other relevant industry publications.
  • Work closely with lawyers and the Marketing & Communications team to develop, coordinate, and promote thought leadership initiatives aligned with business priorities.
  • Collaborate with the Digital Marketing team to enhance the online presence of the practice groups and key lawyers through website content, social media engagement, search engine optimization (SEO), and emerging digital discoverability initiatives.
  • Maintain and enhance marketing collateral, experience records, representative matters, and other practice-specific business development assets.
  • Assume responsibility for additional practice groups, industry groups, firm initiatives, and special projects as assigned, with responsibilities evolving in response to the firm's strategic priorities and business needs.

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, Business Administration, Communications, Law, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in business development, marketing, client development, or a related field. Strong preference for candidates with legal or other professional services-related firm experience.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting senior stakeholders and delivering strategic business development initiatives in a complex, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong commercial awareness and understanding of business development, client relationship management, and market positioning.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate business priorities into actionable plans and measurable results.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, stakeholders, and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical and research capabilities, including the ability to synthesize client, market, and competitive intelligence into actionable recommendations.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to produce compelling business development and client-facing materials.

$70,000 to $95,000 per annum. Pay range to be commensurate with experience.
