SPECIALIZED EDUCATION TECHNICIAN NATURE OF WORK

The primary and regular role of the employee in this job class is to apply specialized education techniques and methods, either within the framework of an intervention plan for students with disabilities or learning difficulties, or within the framework of a program for students requiring special support.

CHARACTERISTIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the responsibility of the school's administration and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, she/he participates in the development and writing of the intervention plan; selects measures to achieve the objectives set out in the plan, develops her/his action plan, and implements these measures; evaluates the achievement of objectives and participates in the evaluation of the plan. She/he develops, organizes, and conducts educational, pedagogical, cultural, recreational, and sports activities aimed at developing social, cognitive, psychomotor, communication, or other skills; selects, prepares, and, if necessary, adapts or manufactures the necessary materials for these activities. She/he collaborates in the determination and implementation of other educational activities such as organizing and supervising work placements.

She/he supports the student in her/his learning, particularly in the classroom; within the limits of her/his skills, she/he helps with reading and writing and provides explanations; she/he assists in learning lessons and completing assignments. She/he observes the situation and intervenes with students in response to their environment; she/he provides them with a helping relationship; she/he uses intervention techniques that can promote a return to calm and order during crises; she/he accompanies them in their behavior modification approach; she/he provides support to the teacher for ensuring a learning-friendly environment in the classroom. She/he uses adapted communication techniques suited to the needs of the students. She/he provides information to sensitize students to various deviations or dependencies and, if necessary, meets with them to advise, assist, or refer them to specialized resources.

She/he oversees students who, following a sanction, must attend their classes in a separate room; she/he helps them continue their schoolwork; she/he agrees with the students and the concerned intervenants on the conditions of their reintegration into the classroom. She/he may be called upon to accompany students in difficulty at the arrival and departure of school buses.

She/he records her/his observations and interventions, maintains files, and writes reports on the situation of the students. She/he collaborates, if necessary, with youth protection agencies and other external intervenants, particularly by reporting cases of abuse or parental neglect; if necessary, she/he assists the concerned administration during student searches. She/he meets with students, parents, and teaching staff to advise, inform, and provide them with relevant documentation and references. If necessary, she/he administers medications according to medical prescriptions and in accordance with the school's student supervision policy and the instructions of the parents; she/he provides first aid. She/he may be called upon to use a computer and the various software necessary for the execution of her/his tasks. She/he may be called upon to initiate less experienced technicians and to coordinate the work of support staff in the tasks performed by this staff in relation to the implementation of technical operation programs for which she/he is responsible. If necessary, she/he completes any other related task.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Hold a college diploma in specialized education techniques or be in possession of a diploma or certificate whose equivalence is recognized by the competent authority.

SCHOOL BOARD REQUIREMENTS

• Experience working with students in specialized education programs
• Experience working with students with specific educational needs and in the creation of an Individualized Education Plan
• Training in autism would be an asset
• Experience working with teaching staff and pedagogy
• Computer skills
• Good interpersonal skills
• Ability to work in a team
• Bilingual
• Knowledge of appropriate means to manage intervention with difficult behaviors
• Good communication skills
• OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Hold a document dated no more than three (3) years, attesting to the successful completion: 1. Either an eight (8) hour general first aid course; 2. Or a six (6) hour refresher course aimed at updating the knowledge acquired in the course mentioned in the previous paragraph.

WORK SCHEDULE
