Occupational Hygiene Technician - Public Health Regional Direction

Mandate

Four (4) permanent full-time positions

Work Location: 6555 Metropolitan Blvd (2 positions) or 1425 Trans-Canada Hwy West (2 positions), Montreal

Person who applies various occupational hygiene techniques to analyze workplaces and their environment. She makes recommendations to improve working conditions and ensures their follow-up. She writes analysis reports and performs calibration of the necessary measurement instruments for the execution of her functions.

Summary of Responsibilities

Under the authority of his/her immediate supervisor (head of the sector of the Deputy Director of the Regional Health and Safety Program where the person is hired), contributes to the improvement of working conditions by participating, within a multidisciplinary team, in the identification of environmental aggressors, the monitoring of workers' exposure, and the reduction and control of health risks through recommendations.

He brings his expertise during the elaboration and implementation of interventions in establishments. These interventions are of three types:

• Investigation following a report of an occupational disease (MADO) or a threat to health according to the Public Health Act.
• Evaluation activities of health elements of prevention programs or action plans within the framework of the law modernizing the health and safety at work regime and special preventive projects by risk or by profession.
• Evaluation of risks present in the environment of pregnant or breastfeeding workers within the framework of the program For a Safe Motherhood.

He contributes to the reduction and control of health risks through evaluation, information, and training activities, by formulating appropriate recommendations, and by following up on the activities carried out. He participates or performs environmental assessments of workplaces when his expertise is required.

Main Responsibilities *Section A. Analysis and Evaluation of the Environment (60%)

• Participate in documentary research in preparation for interventions in establishments;
• Participate in the characterization of workplaces by documenting and analyzing the risks of visited companies.
• Perform the intervention steps in occupational hygiene, namely:
• o Identification and analysis of workplace risks;

o Preparation and implementation of environmental monitoring activities to identify contaminants and evaluate workers' exposure levels; o Interpretation of results and report writing; o Elaboration, presentation, and implementation of protection or prevention interventions; o Determination of recommendations on appropriate means to eliminate, reduce, or control workers' exposure; o Follow-up of requests and management of files within the set deadlines; o Proper follow-up of recommended corrective measures.

• Evaluate the level of establishment support in collaboration with other team members;
• Use measurement devices in accordance with the occupational hygiene quality assurance program.
• *Section B. Counseling and Support (15%)
• Provide support for the planning, organization, and implementation of industrial hygiene activities of his/her team;
• Collaborate in the establishment of mechanisms for harmonizing industrial hygiene practices in the region;
• Collaborate in the evaluation of the impact of interventions in establishments;
• Advise the workplace on questions related to industrial hygiene and risk management.
• *Section C. Specific Tasks (15%)
• Enter and validate data on various databases, including the Occupational Health Information System, in accordance with data entry guidelines and participate in annual planning;
• Collaborate in the interpretation and analysis of various files;
• Participate in recommendations regarding the choice of instruments used in the occupational hygiene service.
• *Section D. Research and Development (5%)
• Collaborate in the conduct of occupational health research;
• Identify and make accessible appropriate technical and scientific documentation;
• Search scientific literature for health effects associated with contaminants in the workplace in order to suggest preventive or source reduction measures;
• Collaborate in the updating of service protocols, programs, and procedures;
• Develop and design communication or awareness, information tools related to workplace risk factors, in collaboration with stakeholders and colleagues.
• *Section E. Other Responsibilities (5%)
• Participate in recommendations regarding the choice of instruments used in the occupational hygiene service;
• Participate in the writing of letters, action plans, or the elaboration and implementation of health elements of prevention programs;
• Represent his/her organization or participate in various local, regional, and provincial committees at the request of his/her immediate supervisor;
• Perform any other related tasks at the request of his/her immediate supervisor.

Academic Education

• Diploma of College Studies (DEC) in environmental hygiene and safety at work
• Asset: Certificate in occupational health and safety

Other Requirements

• Basic technical knowledge of the functioning of devices used in occupational hygiene.
• Asset: Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Public Health Act (PHA), Workers Compensation Act (WCA), and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (OHSR).
• Asset: Experience as an occupational hygiene technician.
• Proficiency in spoken and written French
• Excellent conceptualization and writing skills (e.g., written reports and work procedures)
• Asset: Good knowledge of spoken and written English

Note: The incumbent will have to interact with anglophone workers and employers. Additionally, his/her work will require reading and understanding scientific literature written in English.

Remarks
