As part of its continued growth in the energy industry and expansion of its presence in the field of independent engineering (IE) services, BBA is looking to increase the execution capacity of its Canadian IE team to meet the growing needs of its clients, particularly independent power producers (IPPs) and developers, who rely on its technical reviews, inspections, and monitoring as part of their investment decision-making process.
As an Independent Engineering Consultant and Project Director, you will contribute to the execution of projects while supporting business development initiatives aimed at establishing new client relationships and strengthening existing ones. You will provide independent engineering services, coordinate a multidisciplinary team, and prepare independent engineering reviews, lender’s technical advisor reports, and reasonable technical due diligence assessments.

- Lead business development and project execution activities in independent engineering and reasonable technical due diligence within BBA’s Energy Business Line
- Coordinate work with BBA’s Energy Business Lines (wind, solar, battery energy storage systems [BESS], transmission and distribution [T&D], thermal, and hydroelectric), its sectors (mining and metals, electricity, energy, and chemicals), and its commercial practices for the execution of independent reviews and multidisciplinary, multitechnical reports
- Build strong relationships with lenders and investors, and leverage them, while leading or executing independent project or portfolio assessments of significant scale in the areas of wind, solar, energy storage, and electricity transmission within the context of financing, refinancing, or mergers and acquisitions operations
- Report to the Director, Independent Engineering Services – Electric Assets
Business Development
- Generate interest in new clients and secure new contracts
- Establish and maintain relationships with targeted clients and those assigned to you
- Participate in sector conferences, events, or association meetings to promote BBA through your informed leadership and create new business opportunities
- Prepare, review, and lead the development of service proposals
- With the support of leadership, the Legal Affairs department, and the commercial team, negotiate and conclude contracts
- Monitor market trends in the renewable energy sector
- Stay informed about BBA’s global capabilities to facilitate cross-selling of services
- Contribute to the strategic development of innovative technical differentiators
- Benefit the sector through your informed leadership by participating in professional activities in the region
- Contribute to the implementation of projects from other BBA divisions, including regional operations and national business lines
- Be able to travel within Canada and abroad to visit different sites (estimated travel percentage: 10% to 20%)
Project Execution
- Ensure project management in compliance with all applicable codes and standards, as well as BBA’s policies and procedures, including safety, environmental, quality, project control, and financial reporting
- Coordinate project activities and those of expanded project teams to ensure project timelines and budgets are met and projects are successfully completed
- Initiate the technical review process and coordinate between experts from different disciplines
- Perform certain steps of reasonable due diligence reviews, including contract and financial model reviews
- Facilitate client meetings
- Coordinate IE-related construction monitoring, including performance audits
- Participate in project financial close, including issues related to letters of credit, lender’s inquiries, disbursement certificates, and lender’s technical advisor tracking
- Develop and train others to expand team skills and service offerings
- Continuously improve company standards, procedures, and templates related to IE services

Posting Summary
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, civil, or mechanical engineering
- Asset: Master’s degree or other advanced studies in engineering or administration
- 5 to 10 years of professional experience in the renewable energy sector (wind, solar, battery energy storage systems, hydroelectricity)
- Experience in project management and mission leadership within the context of technical services for project financing, merger and acquisition operations, asset disposals, and refinancing
- Experience in leading business development and service proposal teams
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or intention/capacity to obtain it; asset: P.Eng. or valid professional engineer license in the United States across multiple jurisdictions
- Proven ability to establish strong and lasting client relationships
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and client interaction skills
- Excellent report writing and editing skills
- Proficiency in MS Office
- Basic knowledge of intermittent energy resource assessment, energy yield forecasting, and major related tools (PV Syst, WaSP, Windfarmer, etc.)
- Ability to work within specialized and multidisciplinary teams, and experience in team and project management
- Knowledge of industry standard contracts, such as original equipment manufacturer supply agreements, IAC contracts, interconnection agreements, service agreements, and warranties
- Knowledge of credit agreements, IE certifications, disbursements, and letters of credit-related issues
- Knowledge of power purchase agreements and power purchase agreements
- Must be authorized to work in Canada
- Must hold a passport and driver’s license, and be able to travel abroad if necessary
- Advanced/intermediate English proficiency to facilitate good collaboration with BBA offices and/or clients located in English-speaking Canadian provinces and internationally (English usage frequency may vary from occasional to daily depending on ongoing projects); asset: fluency in other languages (French, Spanish, Portuguese)
- Asset: Extended experience in wind energy, photovoltaic solar, hydroelectricity, energy storage, microgrids, or energy conversion systems
- Asset: Knowledge of policies, standards, guidelines, rules, and regulations applicable to North American energy markets and other jurisdictions
- Asset: Experience in the construction industry
Overview of BBA’s Total Compensation
- Annual base salary, ranging from $120,000 to $170,000
