Reading Committee Member
By joining the 2nd reading committee of the Kaléidoscope project, you will contribute to updating our selection of youth books that promote equality, diversity, and inclusion.
This reading committee will be led by Noëlline Pellerin.
Each meeting will focus on a specific theme of the project. Before each meeting, you will receive a list of approximately five youth books to read — feel free to choose one or several, depending on your availability.
For each reading done, you will be invited to fill out a short questionnaire of about five minutes, to share your impressions and evaluate the relevance of the book.
The monthly meetings will then allow for collective exchange on the readings and to decide together whether the books are kept, removed, or proposed for revision to the youth services team.
Meeting frequency: once a month, on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
Here are the dates and the themes covered:
- October 14 – self-affirmation
- November 11 – gender equality
- December 9 – cultural diversity
- January 13 – society
- February 10 – family diversity
- March 10 – functional diversity
- April 14 – sexual and gender diversity
- May 12 – body diversity
Responsibilities
- Read one or several books from the received selection;
- Fill out the evaluation form for each reading;
- Read the information document concerning the theme provided with the list of books;
- Participate in the monthly meetings;
Decide, following the discussions during the committee, whether the book is retained, removed, or passed for revision.
Requirements
- Demonstrated interest in reading and youth literature;
- Demonstrated interest in equality, diversity, and inclusion;
Ability to work in a volunteer team and demonstrate flexibility.
Benefits of being a volunteer at the YWCA Quebec
- A free course per session of the leisure programming (under certain conditions);
