Embedded Systems Developer *Quebec City, QC (On-Site) – Office/Client*

Working as a senior embedded systems developer at Thales Digital Solutions, you will be paired with a dynamic and growing team composed of engineers and scientists with very diverse knowledge and skills. Our team specializes in cyber analysis of embedded systems and the development of countermeasures.

Our mandate is to ensure that Thales' critical solutions and our clients' are resilient to potential cyber attacks. We therefore protect various critical operational and Industrial IoT technologies such as vehicles, aircraft, ships, and satellites. We therefore have a concrete and real impact on the security of these critical systems.

As an embedded systems developer at Thales Digital Solutions:

  • As an embedded systems developer, you will be responsible for developing, testing, and delivering software that can be deployed on embedded systems or that allows communication with embedded systems in collaboration with clients;
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary, dynamic, and growing teams specializing in the security analysis of embedded systems and the development of countermeasures to ensure that Thales' critical solutions and those of our clients are resilient to potential cyber attacks, as well as protecting various critical operational and Industrial IoT technologies such as vehicles;
  • As an embedded systems developer, you will have a concrete and real impact on the security of these critical systems.

Essential Functions

  • Participate in the "reverse engineering" of software or hardware of certain embedded systems to understand their operation and identify potential vulnerabilities;
  • Perform penetration tests on embedded systems;
  • Develop and assemble test benches to perform cybersecurity tests;
  • Perform tests to confirm vulnerabilities (observational or destructive);
  • Develop tools to communicate with or analyze the behavior of embedded systems;
  • Design, program, and test software that can be deployed on embedded systems;
  • Participate in the smooth running of activities within an Agile team (Sprint Planning, Daily Meeting, Sprint Review, and Sprint Retrospective);
  • Document and effectively communicate the results of the tests performed;
  • Perform all these tasks in accordance with the team's good practices.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in computer science, electronics, or any other relevant field;
  • Knowledge of scripting languages (Python, Bash, PowerShell) and programming languages (C/C++, C#, etc.);
  • Knowledge of embedded programming software (Keil, STM32CubeIDE, etc.);
  • Understanding of the internal operation of a microcontroller and internal peripherals (IO, DMA, Timers, PLL, ADC, DAC, etc.);
  • Understanding of low-level protocols (I2C, SPI, Serial, CAN, etc.);
  • Experience in electrical circuit design and fabrication is an asset but not a requirement;
  • Good command of spoken and written French; command of English is an asset but not a requirement.

*This position requires a good knowledge of English for the writing of technical documents, to interact, support and/or provide services to international clients, employees, and/or partners as well as to foreign government authorities who do not speak French.*

Desired Qualifications

  • Interest in the field of cybersecurity;
  • Experience in the security of embedded system components;
  • Analysis of side-channel leaks or fault injection on embedded systems to evaluate and validate the security of the hardware at the component level;
  • Experience with physical reading or probing techniques at the component level;
  • Knowledge of disassemblers like IDA/Ghidra is an asset;
  • A keen sense of code quality and good programming and architecture practices is desired;
  • Experience with Agile development methods (Scrum, Kanban) is an asset;
  • Interest in embedded systems;
  • Intellectual curiosity, a taste for learning and diversifying;
  • Teamwork skills and a preference for collective intelligence;
  • A strong sense of professional ethics is essential.

*This position may require the need to meet the eligibility criteria described in the Canadian Controlled Goods Program and the Canadian Industrial Security Program.*
