Senior Applied AI Engineer
Construction & engineeringDescription
ABOUT US
We are one of the largest investors for pension plans in Canada, with a net asset under management of $320.6 billion as of March 31, 2026.
We invest funds for public sector pension plans, the Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the Reserve Force. Investissements PSP's headquarters is located in Ottawa and its main business office is located in Montreal. It also has offices in New York, London, and Hong Kong.
The execution and management of complex global-scale investments require us to work in the spirit of "One PSP" to seize valuable opportunities in close collaboration with some of the world's largest companies. At Investissements PSP, you will join a motivated and engaged team that is working to grow our organization like never before.
YOUR ROLE
Floyd is PSP's internal AI platform—a custom analyst designed for our investment teams. It combines a conversational assistant and specialized workflows that transform complex research questions into structured deliverables ready to support decision-making. Behind the scenes, Floyd is an agentic system that orchestrates the most advanced models using OpenAI, Google (Gemini), and Anthropic (Claude) APIs: it directs each task to the most suitable model and breaks down complex problems into subtasks that it processes in parallel. Floyd is already changing the way investment professionals work, and this is just the beginning: there is much more to build.
This role places you at the forefront of applied AI within an institutional investor. Both highly hands-on and highly autonomous, it combines AI engineering, a real product sense, and close collaboration with the people who will use what you build. You will carry projects from start to finish—from a vague need expressed by an investment team to a reliable solution deployed in production—with the full latitude to choose how to achieve this.
You will have the opportunity to shape an AI platform of scale at one of Canada's largest pension fund managers, with a direct impact on investment research. You will also have access to cutting-edge models and large-scale exclusive data within a seasoned and collaborative team.
As a Senior Applied AI Engineer, you will need to:
- Design and develop the core agentic system of Floyd: request engineering (prompting), tool calls, information retrieval in structured and unstructured data, orchestration of multiple models, and evaluation
- Collaborate with our data engineers to build, on Databricks, the ML and AI deployment pipelines that power Floyd—our main platform for data engineering, data science, and AI workload execution
- Work on the entire stack: Floyd's Python SDK and its user interfaces (front-end) in Gradio or React
- Ensure the quality of Floyd in production—reliability, latency, costs, and monitoring—while adhering to the data security and governance standards of a financial institution
- Leverage AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Codex) to accelerate the transition from prototype to production, and help the team get the most out of them
- Advise/partner closely with investment professionals: build trust, foster adoption, and feed the product with what you learn on the ground
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
We are looking for an experienced person who has already delivered real AI products and who enjoys working closely with their users.
- At least five (5) years of experience in designing and deploying software or machine learning systems, ideally in hands-on and user-facing roles
- Practical experience in designing and deploying large-scale applications based on large language models (LLMs)
- Practical mastery of agent frameworks, vector databases, model fine-tuning, and LLM observability and evaluation tools
- Strong expertise in Python and solid skills in JavaScript/TypeScript: you are as comfortable building a Python SDK as a Gradio or React interface
- Practical experience with Databricks for data engineering, data science, or model deployment
- Comfort with cloud platforms: we mainly work with Azure (Databricks, AKS) and Google Cloud (Vertex AI)
- Experienced user of AI coding assistants like Claude Code or Codex
- A lot of autonomy and good judgment in ambiguous and rapidly evolving contexts, combined with a strong team spirit
- Excellent communication skills: you bridge the gap between business experts and engineers, and you explain complex concepts simply
- Experience with tabular and time series data manipulation, a plus
- Experience with classical machine learning (beyond LLMs), a plus
- Experience in financial services, asset management, or capital markets, or knowledge of investment research processes, a plus
- Experience in MLOps and platform engineering (CI/CD, containers, Kubernetes/AKS), a plus
- Bilingual: English and French *(frequent interactions in English with PSP employees based in our Hong Kong, London, and New York offices, and interactions in French with employees in our Montreal and Ottawa offices)*
We offer a tailored employee experience and a competitive* set of total compensation and benefits, designed to attract and retain diverse talent worldwide, reward performance, and strengthen the company's strategies and priorities. Beyond salary and eligibility for incentive compensation, you have access to:
- Investment in career development
- Comprehensive group insurance plans
- Competitive pension plans
- Unlimited access to virtual healthcare services and wellness programs
- Inclusive paid parental leave policy for all genders: up to 26 weeks for primary caregivers, 5 weeks for partners
- Customized family-building support, from pre-pregnancy to menopause, with available financial assistance
- Vacation days available on the first day, with additional days for important service anniversaries, and summer Friday afternoon off
- Flexible hybrid work model with a mix of in-office and remote days
- *The benefits package may vary depending on the type of employee.*
