Technical Underwriting Specialist

Position Summary

Reporting to the AVP National SME, the Technical Underwriting Specialist serves as the technical expert for the underwriting team. This role is responsible for providing ongoing technical guidance, supporting the development of underwriting standards, delivering technical training, conducting underwriting quality audits, and reviewing underwriting files requiring additional technical expertise or referrals.

In addition to providing technical leadership and supporting the development of underwriting excellence, the Technical Underwriting Specialist remains actively involved in underwriting activities and manages a portfolio of commercial insurance accounts within established underwriting guidelines and authority levels.

Leveraging strong underwriting expertise and a collaborative approach, the successful candidate will help maintain high underwriting quality standards while supporting the growth and development of the underwriting team.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Support & Team Collaboration (40%)

• Serve as the primary technical resource for underwriters, providing guidance on underwriting decisions and the interpretation of underwriting guidelines
• Review and approve underwriting standards to ensure they accurately reflect policy wordings and meet program requirements
• Collaborate with underwriters to develop and maintain insurer underwriting guidelines
• Partner with the Team Lead on projects, including evaluating underwriters' authority levels
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of underwriting processes and best practices

Technical Training & Development (40%)

• Deliver technical insurance training to underwriting staff
• Coach and mentor underwriters to support their professional development
• Assist with the implementation of new underwriting standards, procedures, and best practices
• Partner with leaders, trainers, and other key stakeholders to facilitate the onboarding and development of new employees
• Conduct underwriting quality audits and file reviews to assess adherence to underwriting guidelines, identify trends, and promote consistent underwriting practices
• Provide coaching, training, and recommendations based on audit findings to support individual and team development

Underwriting & File Review (20%)

• Manage and underwrite a portfolio of new
